A practical Singapore guide for HDB ceilings, bedroom cornices and aircon-wet plaster.
Ceiling mould returns when the moisture feeding it never stops — steam from showers, condensation on cold ceilings, or a slow leak. Kill the mould at its root, dry the surface, seal with a primer, then repaint with anti-mould paint such as Gush Care. Fix ventilation too, or the mould will work through any paint.

Mould is not a paint problem — it is a moisture problem with a paint symptom. In Singapore homes, ceiling mould almost always traces back to one of three moisture sources: steam and humid air rising from bathrooms and kitchens, condensation forming where aircon-cooled plaster meets warm humid air, or a slow leak above the ceiling that keeps a patch permanently damp.
The second reason is paint itself. Mould sends microscopic roots through the paint film into the plaster beneath. If you paint over a living colony, the fresh coat looks clean for a few weeks — then the stain and the colony grow straight through the new paint. That is why a purely cosmetic repaint fails so predictably, and why the sequence below matters more than the paint brand alone.
A ceiling that has grown mould before needs three layers, not one:
At roughly 10–12 m² per litre per coat, a typical HDB bedroom ceiling takes under 1L per coat, so a full 5L tin of Care (from S$31 for 1L) covers the room with margin. Our 18-month follow-ups on HDB bathroom ceilings treated with this system show the mould-free surface holding — the paint resists regrowth, but only because the root and the moisture were dealt with first.
Tip: whichever colour you choose, pick it from a real room view — every Gush shade is shown on full room photographs, and tinted paint is mixed to order so it cannot be returned. Only pure white can be returned unopened within 7 days.
If mould covers more than about one ceiling quadrant, keeps returning after a proper repaint, or a family member has asthma, the source is usually above the ceiling or inside the wall. That is the point to get it assessed rather than repainting again.
Because the paint was applied over living mould, or the moisture never stopped. Mould sends roots through the paint film, so a fresh coat on top of a colony grows straight through it. Meanwhile condensation — especially on cold aircon ceilings — keeps re-wetting the surface. Remove the mould properly, fix the airflow, then repaint.
Not successfully. A mould-over-mould repaint looks clean for a few weeks, then the stain and the colony reappear through the new coat. Clean and treat the surface first, let it dry fully, seal with a stain-blocking sealer such as Gush EcoSeal, then apply two coats of anti-mould paint.
Gush Care for bedrooms and living-room ceilings, and Gush Clean Care for steam-prone ceilings and walls such as bathrooms and kitchens. Both carry Gush anti-mould technology, which was tested 100% mould-free over 21 days in a controlled chamber. For a full ceiling repaint, one coat of EcoSeal followed by two coats of Care or Clean Care.
