Bathroom Paint Guide

    Bathroom anti-mould paint guide

Choosing and applying paint that survives a Singapore bathroom — ceilings, steam walls and all.

    Quick Answer

Bathroom ceilings and walls stay damp for hours after every shower, so they need paint made for wet rooms. Clean any live mould first, seal with Gush EcoSeal, then apply Gush Clean Care on the walls for a scrub-resistant, anti-bacterial finish and Gush Care on the ceiling. Run an exhaust fan for 20 minutes after showers.

Why bathrooms grow mould faster than anywhere else

A Singapore bathroom cycles between saturated and merely damp every day. Hot showers push humidity to near 100%, steam condenses on the coolest surface — almost always the ceiling — and the room then stays humid for hours, especially in flats where the exhaust fan is weak or the window stays shut. Paint film that survives this cycle needs two properties: it must resist mould growing on it, and it must tolerate being scrubbed without the finish breaking down.

    Ceilings first, walls second

If your bathroom mould is on the ceiling, deal with it before touching the walls — it is the coldest, least-ventilated surface and the one mould colonises first. Clean off any live growth, let the surface dry fully, then build the system: one coat of Gush EcoSeal sealer, followed by two coats of Gush Care or Gush Clean Care. On walls, water splashes and steam grime mean a washable finish earns its price: Clean Care's anti-bacterial film wipes clean without polishing the paint away.

At roughly 10–12 m² per litre per coat, a small HDB bathroom typically needs a 1L tin for the ceiling (from S$31 for Care, from S$34 for Clean Care) and 1–2L for the walls, depending on height and colour change. Coverage matters more with deep colours — plan for a spare tin rather than running short mid-wall.

The five-step prep that decides how long it lasts

    1. Clean off live mould with a mould-killing treatment — never just bleach the stain; the roots survive in the plaster.
    2. Dry the room out: fan on, window open, at least overnight. Damp plaster under fresh paint traps moisture and blisters.
    3. Cut in edges and corners first, where condensation collects, then roll the fields.
    4. Apply the sealer, then two coats of paint, letting each coat dry fully before the next.
    5. Keep the room dry for 24 hours after the final coat before showers or steam return.

Aftercare: the habits that stretch the repaint

    • Run the exhaust fan for 20 minutes after every shower — most Singapore bathrooms can expel the humidity in that window.
    • Wipe visible condensation off the ceiling and upper walls during rainy-season weeks.
    • Fix dripping mixer taps and shower screens that channel water onto painted walls.
    • Do not stack damp towels over painted walls — a permanent damp patch is a mould nursery.

Note: tinted colours are mixed to order and non-returnable — only pure white can be returned unopened within 7 days. Pick your shade from a real room photo first; every Gush colour is shown painted on full room photography.

    FAQ

Which Gush paint should I use on a bathroom ceiling?

Gush Care or Gush Clean Care, over one coat of EcoSeal sealer. Bathroom ceilings take the worst of steam and condensation, so the anti-mould finish matters more there than anywhere else in the flat. Clean Care adds a washable, stain-resistant film, which helps where steam deposits grime as well as moisture.

Can I use the same paint on bathroom walls as on the ceiling?

Yes — Clean Care on both is a safe choice for bathrooms. Its anti-bacterial, scrub-resistant finish is designed for surfaces that get splashed and wiped. For feature walls away from the shower zone, you can also pick any of the 221 coded Gush shades in Care or Clean Care.

How long must I wait before using the shower after painting?

Let each coat dry fully before the next, and leave the bathroom dry for at least 24 hours after the final coat before running hot showers. Steam on uncured paint softens the film and undoes the mould protection.
